Mezzanine Floor Construction

Based on the most common mezzanine floor design.

Sizes & weights may change, depending on floor slab details, items being stored or the mezzanine floors usage. 

Floor design:  In accordance with BRE Digest 437 & BS5950

Design Load:  Storage (BRE Digest 437 Table 1) 

Live Load:   4.8 kn/m²
Dead Load:   0.5 kn/m²

Decking:   38mm Flooring Grade Particle Board-TG2-Grade P6-Natural finish
Maximum concentrated point load of 3.5 kn over 50x50 area.

Secondary Joists:  Cold formed "C" sections-manufactured from pre-hot dipped galvanised mild steel to BS2989. Inset into main beams to keep floor depth to a minimum.

Main Beams:  Hot rolled painted Universal Beams.

Columns:   Hot rolled painted rolled hollow sections.

Base Plates:  We usually allow for 300mm x 300mm square plates. Full specification of the concrete slab will be required to justify the exact size.

Handrail:  Industrial handrail 1100 high - painted rolled hollow section posts & Kick Plate: with powder coated grey (RAL 7042) top and middle rails.

Bracing:   Bracing is usually allowed. The exact locations will need to be agreed

Staircases: Industrial painted staircase to comply with Part K or Part M Building Regulations, durbar treads-open risers-rolled hollow section stringers and handrail to both sides.

Loading Gates
Swing type loading gates or painted rolled hollow section framed safety gate to suit a maximum pallet size of 1200 wide x 1000 x 1800 high.
Loading plate painted 3mm durbar plate 1200 wide x 1200 deep x 200 front edge return.

Natural finish soft wood timber 125mm high x 15mm positioned on top of handrail baseplate and fixed to face of box section posts.

Main steelwork – painted in primer or any colour from our standard range, normally blue or grey.
Joists – galvanized
Decking – natural 38mm chipboard
Other finishes to enhance your corporate image can be achieved for an additional cost.

Paint Finish:  Our standard colours are Azure Blue (RAL 5010) and Graphite Grey (RAL 7024) International 222 air drying enamel full gloss. We can offer a variety of other colours or work with RAL colours given to us by the customer. This may occur a small charge.

Fire Protection
In certain cases it may be necessary to fire rate the underside of the structure. As part of our services we will consult with the Fire or Building Control Officer on your behalf and advise accordingly.
Fire protection can be offered as an option, utilising suspended ceilings, fascia's and column casing. Check out our page on when fire rating is required for a mezzanine floor.

Local Authority Approval
Our service can include for making all relevant Local Authority and Building Regulation submissions. The cost for this service will be shown as an option, on every quotation given.
